Ministry

It was a pretty amazing weekend!  I hope that all of our veterans had a wonderful Monday as we celebrated your service!  There are just no words to thank you enough for what you do for our families.  As Christians, we intimately understand what it means to be willing to lay down your life for a stranger….pretty awesome!

Sunday was packed at all three campuses!  Hazel Dell, Battle Ground, and Battle Ground Deaf Church were all well attended with many guests…that’s how we like it.  Everybody is welcome, no matter what your story, to come and learn about who Jesus is!

Wasn’t the Phil Stacey concert amazing?!?!?  I had a lot of fun and very much enjoyed each of the singers.  Matt Garner, Eddie Coleman, and Lee Malone might have been my favorite, though!  If you’d still like to give to Charity Water, here is the link:  http://www.my.charitywater.org/be-present  Our totals from the concert will be added soon!

Take note of the All Church Business Meeting on November 17 from 5-6:00 pm at the Hazel Dell Campus.  This meeting is to give you ALL the information about the potential building purchase for the Hazel Dell Campus.  If you attend Battle Ground, this is for you as well!  We are one church that is looking to use our money to best impact those all over Clark County.

Jordan (at BG) and Matt (at HD) both knocked it out of the park with worship on Sunday.  A shout out to their teams as well!  It takes a lot of work to lead people in worship each week.  By the way, how is your worship life?  Are you taking those precious moments to turn your attention on Jesus?

Josiah preached at Battle Ground on the life of John the Baptist.  Isn’t it fun to watch Josiah preach?  He is extremely gifted in memorization and will rattle off a full chapter of the Bible in the middle of his sermon…every time!  It’s fascinating!

We also kicked off Be Present at Hazel Dell.  This one is near and dear to my heart because it is solely rooted in where our hearts really are.  We focus SO much on the fear in this world when we look at our giving and don’t put near enough focus on the power of God.  He’s going to take care of us.  It’s OK to be generous and trust Him.  This will be a great service as we head into the Christmas season.

I was barely a teenager when Rich Mullins wrote a song that he described as “the worst song he had ever written” and “poorly crafted”.  The song was called Awesome God and it took off like wildfire in the worship world in the late 80’s.  It would become the symbol and reminder for me of hope, of power, and of salvation.

The first time I heard this song, I was at Glacier Bible Camp in Hungry Horse, Montana.  I had gone to camp for the last few summers and had accepted Jesus as my personal Savior, but I had no way to get to church the rest of the year.  My entire spiritual life banked on the five days I was at camp every August.

I could probably describe every square foot of that chapel at camp where I first heard this song because so many of my life changing moments happened there.  I can remember where I was at the altar on a Tuesday night in August, 1986 crying out to make Jesus MY God.  I threw my arms around my friend’s neck and thanked her for introducing me to a Christ I had never known.  There were no words in that moment.  Years later, I spilled tears of anger on that same altar and found the forgiveness I needed to walk victoriously through my life.  I would first feel the Holy Spirit and His power in that room.  Then there would also be a sweet moment when I would go back, many summers later, as a Kid’s Camp Counselor.  I stayed late one night after all the kids left to weep over their lives.  It was then that I first felt the burden of Jesus’ love for people.  It was a confusing feeling for my human heart until our District Youth Director laid his large hand on my shoulder and explained what a pastor’s heart felt like.  God had called me to ministry.

Whenever I hear that old song about our Awesome God, I am taken back in time to those moments.  I can close my eyes and picture the first time that the band began to play.  The words popped up on an overhead projector and as I read them, truth filled my young soul.

With wisdom, power, and love

Wisdom, power, and love.  This awesome God they were speaking of was filled with what I felt like I lacked in my life.  He had the answers, He had the capability to move mountains, and He loved me.   I began to sing out as loud as I could, determined to let my voice rise above the hundreds of other kids in the room.  I know that God saw me, struggling to get enough air in my lungs to sing my tribute to Him.  I was never loud enough on this earth, but I am sure that my voice was echoed in Heaven those nights at camp.

To read that Rich Mullins thought that this song was his worst makes me smile.  What makes it so interesting is that what he considered a failure is the very thing that God used to stamp His memories in my heart and change the course of my life.  It is like a signature for me to remember that when I feel like my efforts are poorly crafted and lacking, that may be the very thing that God uses to exalt Himself.  That simple song is a constant picture to me to turn over my efforts to an Awesome God and see what He can do with His wisdom, His power, and His love.

So, don’t worry so much about where you are weak today.  Just turn over those weaknesses to a God who spoke into darkness and created light.  He can do the same with the song in your heart as well!

Tithing is the single greatest issue that the Church struggles with as a whole.  No one other issue limits ministry, hinders personal growth, and stops you from living the life that God designed for you to live.  I have such a heart for the local church, telling people about Jesus, and the financial well-being of our people and I believe they all go hand-in-hand!  My hope is that this blog will cause you to change everything about your current giving and spending habits!  Lofty goal? YES!  But I’m all about impractical dreams mixed with an all-powerful God!

The problem that is created by our lack of willingness to tithe is two-fold.

First of all, our personal finances are in jeopardy if we decide to consume 100% of our income.  Statistics show that tithers carry much less debt than most people and are financially better off than Christian non-tithers—80% of “tithers” have no unpaid credit card bills; 74% have no car payments; 48% own their home; and 28% are completely debt-free. (For the official source of this article CLICK HEREThis is because when we are in alignment with God’s plan for our giving and spending, we will find health.  The principle of obedience is also true for sexual boundaries, moral boundaries, as well as these financial boundaries.  When we follow a Biblical framework, we will find holistic well-being time and time again.

Part of the reason for the above statistics is that people who come into alignment with God’s ideal for giving will tend to come in alignment for spending as well.  This will play out by not using credit cards to accumulate possessions we can’t afford, and buy cars that are out of our cash-purchase range.  When we have submitted our finances to God, we tend to make decisions that benefit our lives for the long-term satisfaction, rather than the short-term pleasure.  Although it requires more discipline, it pays out in less stress, more joy, and more freedom.1213643-Exhausted-Businessman-Carrying-The-Burden-Of-A-Heavy-Boulder-Load

The other issue that a lack of tithing creates is that our responsibilities as Christ-followers to reach, disciple and care for people are passed to someone else.  When we refrain from tithing, we are saying, “God, I know that you have given me this “rock” to carry as a Christian, but I don’t want to carry it.”  Unfortunately, that responsibility or “rock” doesn’t disappear….people still need to hear about Jesus and still need a church to be discipled in, so when we forgo our job, someone else picks it up and adds it to the load they were already assigned.

But sometimes that load becomes too heavy and the ramifications are that some people never even hear the message of Jesus because the resources can only stretch so far and the weight can only be so heavy.  Yes, we lived happily as a consumer, but they died without the hope of Christ.  Harsh?  Unfortunately, but said in the positive it is the most motivating thing in the world – When we give, people are reached with the message of Jesus…churches are birthed, communities are changed, people are set free, sex workers are rescued, the thirsty can drink, the widows are cared for, children are protected, the weary are refreshed, the hungry are fed, the lame are healed, and the suicidal are saved… I could gladly go on with all the ways our measly resources are used by Jesus to impact eternity!  His plan for us sacrificing a little to make a big impact is really astounding!

So, how do you go from spending to giving and being a part of changing the world?  Here’s a few ideas:

1.  Give first.  Yep, write the giving check before the other checks.  Why?  Because there is never enough left at the end of the month if we allow ourselves to spend first.  By writing the giving check first, we are saying, “OK, God, I trust you.  If the washing machine breaks down and there’s no money left, YOU have a big problem, God.”  And just watch, because He will come through every time!  It’s living in faith and it will be good for you!

2.  Don’t wait to get out of debt before you start giving.  Why?  Well, that will never happen.  You’ll die before you’re out of debt if you don’t come in alignment with God’s plan.  Start today and watch God help you get out of debt in miraculous ways – the first one being His ability to change your perspective!

3.  Reward yourself.  Not in a prideful way, of course, but when you hear about a Story of a Changed Life coming from your church, say to yourself, “Self, because you gave, that person gets to experience Jesus.”  Help yourself make the connection between your giving and eternity…because there is a BIG connection!

So, give it a shot!  I understand the fear your facing when deciding to give, but I’m on the other side of the mountain and it’s AWESOME over here!  God just keeps changing lives and the stories are worth every penny.  I believe in you!

 

 

 

 

Such a great weekend!  It seems like October took flight and flew right by me!  Hard to believe that another month has come and gone…

We got the privilege of giving away two first time Bibles on Sunday.  One to a child and one to an adult.  I so vividly remember my first Bible and what it meant to me!  It was love at first sight!  You can sponsor a box of Bibles for $75.00.  That will provide 24 people with their first opportunity to read the Word of God.  What an honor!

We had amazing worship sets and sermons at each campus!  Love our worship team.  Love our preachers!

I have a shout out to Kari and Terrance who have been coming early to do whatever needs to be done!  They are such wonderful people and I thank God every day for bringing them through the doors!  We also have so many more people who serve behind the scenes that I am thankful for!

My mom was in town for a few days.  She is a crafting genius, so my house is covered in kid’s crafts…I have never seen so much construction paper in my life.

We had a very educational Question/Answer time for our potential new building on Sunday night.  Chris Harold made charts and diagrams…pretty cool! If you couldn’t be at that meeting, we’ll find a way to get all that info to you soon.

How can you help with the building process?  Give money.  Financial institutions base decisions about lending on the financial backing of the congregation.  (In a perfect world, they would just give us money because we are nice people, but that’s not reality!)   Also, moving has a cost to it.  We will need money for some renovation, paint, and equipment, all the while continuing to pay our staff and maintain our ministries.  If you aren’t tithing, now is a great time to start.  If you are able to give above and beyond your tithe, we would appreciate it!  If you would like to give before the month’s end, you can give online at www.coffeechurch.com.

What is the timeline for the building purchase?  We have until November 25 to make a decision with the purchase price of $575,000.

We’ve had a lot of questions lately about the Battle Ground youth ministry.  We are doing well getting a team together, but are still searching out the main leader of that ministry.  Would you pray with us for God’s perfect fit?

Small Groups are a little over half done already.  I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know a lot of new friends from our group.  We’ve been discussing personal finances, which has been so interesting.  Debt should be one of the greatest enemy in our lives!

We are having a building inspection done today on the potential new facility, so we’ll keep you posted on any concerns that may arise from that.  Also, tonight there is a walk through from 6-7:00 pm for those of you who may not have seen it, yet!  The address is 811 NE 88th Circle, Vancouver, WA 98665.

Below I posted the most mind-numbing list of complaints received by Thomas Cook Vacations from dissatisfied customers.  It made me laugh and groan at the same time, but I think it hits home with all of us as well.  Each of these travelers were probably in some of the most beautiful places and amazing accommodations on our planet, yet each one found absurd issues in the midst of tranquility.  As humans, most of us would have to admit that we are complainers as well.  Not because we want to be, but because it is often the go-to emotion we feel when we view the world.  It is just easier for our spirits to find something we would change rather than express the gratitude for what went well and what we appreciated!  (I look forward to Heaven when I believe that those scales will tip to the other side and our mouths will speak only with dripping gratitude for an awesome God!)

The Bible addresses about how we should think and speak on a consistent basis.  If you do a simple word study on “complain”, you very quickly get the gist that our complaints rarely amount to any worth.  The Bible tells us in Philippians 4:8 –  Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.

Yet, when we step out of a performance, a sermon, or a conversation, we often go into complain mode rather that reflect on what was praiseworthy!  Oh, to have this one verse nailed in my own heart!

I believe that many of the issues we face in our culture stem back to our lack of praise and our insistence on complaining.  I think that our roots of depression, bitterness, and burn out come straight back to our own inability to set aside the ignoble to focus on the noble.  We have trained ourselves to speak the negative and then we are surprised when our hearts follow our mouths!

My challenge for all of us this weak is to do two things:

1.  Lean in to the Holy Spirit on this issue.  This is one of those areas where we are often weak, but the Holy Spirit can put us in check when we have the desire to complain.  Ask Him to help you to see the world from God’s perspective.  What unique traits did He give to the person that irritates you?  What lessons does He have for you to learn in the midst of frustrating circumstances?  Who is He trying to use your life to lead to Christ?

2.  Train yourself to do the opposite of what you may have been doing.  Some of the work is done by the Holy Spirit, but some of the work is done in the framework of obedience.  We are all in control of what leaves our mouths, whether we believe that or not!  Own your words and conform them into God-honoring words instead of negative ones.

The reality is that more change will come from our praise than our complaints.  No, really.  I’m not sure we believe that!  It’s like telling a child they are fat and thinking it will motivate them to lose weight…quite the opposite!  Complaining often sends the hearer into their own state of despair rather than a state of motivation to be the best they can be!  We’ve all got to mold and shape our perspectives of people and situations to limit our complaints and exalt our praise.  It is a simple way to change the world…or at least change ourselves.
